Set in Brazil, a young American immigrants (Willis) arrives in Rio, to learn more about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, after his visa is denied. Joao's journey begins with his arrival in the city, where he works as a street fighter and soon becomes the best in the city. Once Joao sets up a home for himself, he meets and fights with many other famous names.

As he learns more about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it quickly becomes apparent that this martial art was born as a way to defend against violent attacks by people and governments. This film shows that Jiu Jitsu, though initially intended to be used only for self-defense, can also be used to defeat those who have not yet learned to respect martial arts.

Joao begins training in other martial arts experts in order to learn how to use Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for his own purposes. Soon, he is competing against other martial artists and his skill is soon being recognized by Hollywood. But Joao is soon becoming aware that many in the West are not really interested in learning this martial art.

Though not much is known about this film in the United States, it was well received in its home country, because of its emphasis on a culture that is still very much alive in our own American culture. The film also takes into consideration some of the problems that are facing many Brazilian immigrants today.
