An Introduction to Colatina Central

Colatina Central is the largest city in northern Espirito Santo, Brazil, close to the town of Vitória, about 100km north of Salvador de Bahia. It lies on the river Doce, which flows through the centre of the city.

Colon is one of the oldest cities of Brazil and was founded by the Portuguese in 1497. It is also the location of the first recorded European contact in Brazil, since Portuguese colonists came there looking for a suitable place to settle.

Colon is known for its wealth of natural resources, especially minerals. It has long been considered a major source of gold, silver, saltpeter, copper, tin, manganese, zinc and tungsten, as well as other precious metals. Because it is close to the equator, it is a prime spot for tropical weather, with an average yearly temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. It is also a rich and productive agricultural land with wheat and cereals grown in its fields, along with fruit trees and vegetable gardens.

Colon is located at the foot of the Andean Tandoori Range, on the east side of the Atlantic Ocean. Its landscape is mountainous and consists mainly of rocky crags, mesas, plateaus, with small valleys which are fed by streams and rivers that run past its peaks.

Walking along the road can also reveal fascinating historical sites like the Convent of Santa Maria de Misericordia and the ruins of the town of Rio de Janeiro.
